How to check a window contractor yourself
Everything we do here, you can do too — the records are public and free. If you only have twenty minutes before signing, spend them like this.

Confirm the legal entity exists
Search the business name in the Ohio Secretary of State register. You are looking for an active registration and the date it was filed. A firm advertising thirty years of experience with a two-year-old registration is worth a question, not necessarily a refusal.

Check workers’ compensation coverage
The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation publishes whether an employer’s coverage is active. If someone is hurt on your property working for an uninsured contractor, that becomes your problem. This is the single check most homeowners skip.

Check city contractor registration
Columbus and most surrounding municipalities require contractors to register, and permits for window replacement are pulled against that registration. Ask which municipality the firm is registered in, then verify it with that city rather than with the firm.

Read complaints, not just ratings
A high star average with a long complaint file tells a different story than a high average alone. Look at the Better Business Bureau complaint record and the Ohio Attorney General’s consumer complaints, and read what the disputes were actually about.

Get the estimate in writing, itemised
Product, labour, disposal, permit fees and any allowance for rot repair found once the old frame is out. Verbal ranges are where the surprises live. Collect two or three so you can see what the real market rate looks like for your house.

Separate the two warranties
The manufacturer warrants the window; the installer warrants the installation. Most failures homeowners complain about are installation failures. Ask how long the labour warranty runs and whether it survives if the firm changes hands.

If the house is historic, check before you order
In districts such as German Village and Victorian Village, replacement windows can be subject to review by the Columbus Historic Resources Commission. Ordering first and asking later is an expensive order of operations.
Signs worth slowing down for
A discount that expires today. A deposit above roughly a third before any material arrives.
No written scope. Reluctance to name the municipality they are registered in. A door-knock
